The March of Dimes North Carolina Preconception Health Campaign is delighted to have been awarded a grant from the CDC. This is the second year in a row that the CDC has awarded us a grant for the “Promotora de Salud” (Lay Health Educator) program. The program provides folic acid education and supplements to Hispanic women in an effort to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects among that highly susceptible population. This year the program is taking place in Mecklenburg County.
In April of this year, we hired two amazing “Promotoras” to carry out this work. Jocelyn Segura, a native of the Dominican Republic, serves as our full-time Promotora. She is the mother of four children and recently became a grandmother for the first time. Prior to working with the Campaign, she worked with an agency as a CNA and has volunteered with Mi Casa Su Casa, the Bethesda Health Clinic and her church.

The Third National Summit on Preconception Health is the crème de la crème of professional conferences for us here at the North Carolina Preconception Health Campaign. This year, we are lucky enough to be able to take most of the Campaign staff with us to Tampa, FL. That’s right; six of the seven Campaign staff are taking a pilgrimage to sunny Florida to immerse ourselves in everything preconception health.
The conference runs from Monday, June 13 to Tuesday, June 14 (and some of us are lucky to be going a little early). This year, the conference is focusing on “Improving Preconception Health in a New Era of Health Care” and they have several tracks that apply to this topic. The tracks are “Public Policy and Finance,” “Public Health and Community-Based Programs,” “Clinical Practice,” “Consumer Education and Social Marketing,” Integrated and Innovative Service Strategies,” and “Data Research and...
We’re so excited about this new website, Everywomannc.com. It’s been a crazy four months putting it together, but we did it! The Campaign would like to thank the three agencies who made it possible.
- The NC Department of Public Health, Women’s Health Branch. They gave us invaluable guidance for the site. Their vision is that this site will function as the flagship preconception health website for the state. To this end, we’ve included lots of information on the State’s Preconception Health Initiatives.
- The UNC Center for Maternal and Infant Health. Every Woman NC was originally designed and maintained by the Center. Much of their original content is still prevalent on the new site; we’ve just spruced things up and added some new features.
